The route to the knockouts
Every club plays eight different opponents. There are no traditional four-team groups and one 36-club table decides the next step.
1st–8th
Direct to round of 16
The strongest eight league-phase records skip the February play-offs.
9th–24th
Knockout phase play-off
These 16 clubs contest two-legged ties for the remaining round-of-16 places.
25th–36th
European campaign ends
There is no transfer into another UEFA competition.
